Essential Supplies to Start Calf Roping

Supplies To Start Calf Roping

In the Old West, if a rancher had an injured or sick calf, they would rope the calf to immobilize it and make veterinary treatment easier to accomplish. Over time, the ranch hands and ranchers would brag about how quickly they could rope and tie calves. This quickly turned into local competitions. If you're interested in trying your hand at the sport, you'll need a few supplies to start calf roping.

These days, horsemanship and athleticism have become just as important as your accuracy and speed with a rope. With associations ranging from children to seniors, as long as you have the ability and willingness to compete in calf roping, it doesn't matter what age you are. South Texas Tack has all the calf roping supplies you need to start.

Many Benefits to Calf Roping

Keary Hines is one of STT's Tack and Equine Specialists, and outside of STT, he is a rodeo athlete, horse trainer and clinician, so he is well-versed in calf roping gear. His interest in calf roping began at age 16 when he discovered the rodeo event and fell in love with it.

"It's a chance to compete, display athleticism and horsemanship. You get a lot of bonding time with the horse." Hines said. "You get to travel making new friends and acquaintances. It's also an opportunity to win trophies and memorabilia that can be passed on to future generations. And when you're young, you have the chance to win scholarships."

What Supplies Do You Need to Start Calf Roping?

If you're wondering what supplies you need to start calf roping, Hines said there are a few essential items every beginner should consider. Two things that many customers start with are a rope and a roping dummy. Hines said there are many different options for both calf ropes and dummies.

"One of my personal favorites that we carry at STT is the Heel-O-Matic Nex Calf Roping Dummy," Hines said. "This one has a realistic angle when standing behind the dummy; it feels life-like and much quieter."

If your budget is a little tight and a roping dummy seems out of reach, there are other options to get started. Hines said many people start off roping a square bale of hay before stepping up to buy a roping dummy.

What Is the Best Rope for Calf Roping?

When you first start shopping for gear for calf roping, you need a rope with a smaller scant (diameter). As your hands gain strength and you become more skilled with the lighter rope, you may choose to step up. Most beginners start with a nylon or poly rope because they don't easily change shape and are weatherproof, requiring less upkeep than traditional grass ropes.

Regarding the size you need, it all depends on your preference and hand size. Hines recommends the Dub Grant 3-Strand New Type Poly Calf Rope. Kids' calf ropes typically have a smaller diameter, around 9.5T-10T, that is soft and pliable. Adults need a slightly larger diameter, around 10.5T-10.75T, that is not as limber.

How Much Does It Cost to Start Calf Roping?

If you're considering jumping into calf roping, you may be worried about the cost of calf roping tack. Luckily, many options are available for ropes and dummies to meet your budget requirements. You don't have to break the bank if you want to start buying calf roping gear. South Texas Tack has the necessary supplies to start calf roping at a price you can afford.
