What Vaccines do we carry at South Texas Tack?

At South Texas Tack we carry many different vaccines to help protect your horses. While there is no existing vaccination program that fits the needs of all horses, many people work with their veterinarians to develop a vaccination schedule specific to each horse. The best way to approach a vaccine schedule for your horse is to have a conversation with your vet.

Vaccines are given seasonally or yearly. Some horses may need different vaccinations than others. The vaccines that your horse needs are often dependent on what situations it is exposed to. If you are showing your horse, your horse is exposed to other horses regularly, or in public places frequently, then you should speak with your vet to come up with the plan that is best for your horse’s specific scenario.

Core Vaccines For Horses

All horses need core vaccinations. Core vaccinations help prevent a wide variety of diseases that are highly infectious, zoonotic (illnesses that can spread between animals and people), and have a very high fatality rate.

Core vaccines include:

· Rabies

· Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)

· Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE)

· Tetanus

· West Nile Virus

Many of the other vaccination options are optional to horses that are considered to be in high-risk areas. If your horse is being shown, is taken into public areas, or is anticipated to be around many other horses then you should discuss risk-based vaccines with your vet.

Risk-Based Vaccines

Risk-based vaccines include equine:

· Herpesvirus (or rhinopneumonitis)

· Equine influenza

· Equine viral arteritis (Stallions only)

· Botulism

· Anthrax

· Strangles

· Leptospirosis

· Potomac horse fever

· Rotaviral diarrhea

These vaccines are given to horses that are anticipated to be around many other horses or who are taken out in public.

Many diseases are seen commonly in barns, showgrounds, and fairgrounds where horses will contract diseases and then bring them back home where they can infect other horses and, in some cases, other species.

Stress, overcrowding, parasites, nutritional deficiencies, food and water contaminants, equipment traveling from other properties, and a lack of proper pest control can all contribute to the increased risk of disease.
