Get Back Into Riding with this Spring Riding Checklist

Posted 01.11.2021 by Admin / Category: Tack

Winter is winding down, the cold has passed, and the springtime sun is shining. This weather can only mean one thing, it's time to get back on the saddle and shake off those winter blues. We've prepared a checklist that can help get you to get back in the groove of spring riding.

  1. The first thing you’re going to want to do is clean and condition your tack. You’re going to want to carefully inspect it for any loose stitching or wear. Make sure to check where the reins attach to the bit, we know this area can get really worn down!
  2. Once you’re done with that go and check your saddle pads and see which ones can hold on for another year. If you find yourself needing some, we have plenty of high-quality good-looking saddle pads in-store or on our website!
  3. Now that you’ve inspected all your tack, it’s time to inspect your horse! If your horse is shedding their winter undercoat, that shedding hair could be itchy and uncomfortable under the saddle pad. Make sure you have all the right tools on hand to remove their undercoat to keep them looking their best.
  4. After these steps are complete, you’re almost ready to go! You’re going to want to make sure you’re dressed for any weather. Spring weather can be tricky, it can be raining and cold one minute, but sunny and warm the next. The best way to tackle this obstacle is to layer. That way when you start riding in the morning and it’s cool, you can take off your jacket when it starts to warm up in the afternoon.
  5. Lastly, check your trails and prepare to clear any overgrown brush from the winter months. You want to be sure that both you and your horse have a safe and clear path to follow.

Take a moment to breathe in that fresh air and enjoy your first rides of the spring! You’ve waited all winter for this. Remember to have fun, be safe, and dress for success!
